Frequently Asked Questions

WHO DO I CONTACT TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?
For four or two year navy / marine / nurse scholarships, please apply online at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil/application/default.cfm

For the NROTC College Program at the U of M / St. Thomas / Macalester, contact LT Schulze at (612) 625-1030.

DO I WEAR A UNIFORM AT SCHOOL?
You wear your uniform for tuesday's drill period, and throughout your classes on Tuesday and Thursday.  All other days you wear appropriate civilian attire.

HOW MUCH DO I GET PAID?
Students on scholarships get a monthly stipend of $250/300/350/400, plus tuition, fees, and a $300 per semester book allowance.
College programmers may go on "Advanced Standing" in their last two years, and recieve $350 to $400 per month those years.

DO I HAVE TO DO ANY PHYSICAL STUFF?
Yes, there is a Physical Readiness Test (PRT) each semester for navy options, and a Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for marine options. Passing standards are:  PRT:  1.5 mile run in 12:30(Male) 15:00(Female), 50(M or F) Situps in 2 minutes, and 42(M) 19(F) pushups in 2 minutes.  Marine Option PFT:  3 mile run in 28 Minutes (Male) or 31 minutes (Female), 50 crunches in 2 minutes, and 3 pull-ups in 2 minutes (Male) or 15 second flexed-arm hang (Female).  These are the minimum to pass, but any Marine Option candidate should strive to be well above these standards.  There are also periodic group physical training consisting of runs, calisthenics, and various sports-type activities.  Students who are over the maximum weight for their height are measured for body fat percentage.  If they are still over limits, it is automatic failure of the PRT/PFT.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME IN NROTC?

NROTC midshipmen are required to complete the course of study prescribed by the college or university that they attend. Midshipmen are also required to take several naval science courses in addition to their college's prescribes courseload.  Due to the increasing compexity of today's Navy, navy option midshipmen are required to complete the equivalent of two semesters of calculus before the end of their sophomore year and two semesters of calculus based physics before the end of their junior year. Midshipmen will also wear the uniform and attend drill on tuesdays.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO MAJOR IN TO FLY / DRIVE SUBS / DRIVE SHIPS / ETC....?
There is no direct corrolation between your major and the warfare area you will enter upon graduation.  Do what you like, because the better grades you have, the better chance of getting the service selection you apply for.  Students wishing to go Nuclear Power should have at the least the ability to deal with higher levels of physics and math, but there is still no major requirement.

WHAT KIND OF EXTRACURRICULARS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE U OF M NROTC UNIT?
There are a myriad.  Currently we have both Close Order and Exhibition Drill Teams, Semper Fi Society for Marine Wannabes, Voluntary Field Training Exercises, Computer Tactical War Simulations, Anchor and Chain Organization, Color Guard, Intramural Sports, a Submarine Club, and an Aviation Club.  Midshipmen also complete, prior to graduation, a week-long sailing curriculum on 23 foot COM-PAC sailboats on Lake Minnetonka.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER GRADUATION?

Upon graduation, NROTC Scholarship Program midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns in the Naval Reserve or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps Reserve.  Midshipmen without scholarships may also receive a commission through the College Program.  College Program midshipmen must serve at least three years of active duty service if they accept a commission.  The service commitment times vary according to what community in which the graduate has selected to serve.

WHAT DO I OWE THE NAVY OR MARINE CORPS AFTER GRADUATION?
Midshipmen will have military service obligations of eight years.  Scholarship mishipmen must serve at least four of those years in active duty status.  College Program midshipmen must serve at least three years of active duty service if they accept a commission. Marine Corps option college program midshipmen are obligated to three and a half years if they accept a commission.  The service commitment times vary according to what community in which the graduate has selected to serve. (The commitment is longer for Nuclear Power and Aviation because of the extensive training involved.)

WHAT ARE THE JOBS I CAN DO IN THE NAVY AS AN ROTC GRADUATE?
